13 COVERS: A CARMINE INFANTINO BATMAN Celebration

From the heights of ’60s Gotham.

If I were to pick a Mount Rushmore of Batman artists, it might look something like this: Neal Adams. Marshall Rogers. Carmine Infantino. And then about 15 others tied for fourth.

But Infantino is right there. As Young Collector Dan, I would stack my ’60s back issues and read them one after the next, enjoying the hey day of the Dynamic Duo, Batman and Robin at their peak.

Infantino was born May 24, 1925, so he would have been 92. (He died in 2013.) This year, I’ve doubled up our 13 COVERS tribute to feature Batman and the Flash (which you can find here). I’ve done this before (click here, here and here) and I’m well aware that Infantino worked on so much more than these two heroes but I can’t get past the fact that the Caped Crusader and the Scarlet Speedster are the ones I immediately think of when I think of Carmine Infantino. (Or maybe it’s because the Batman/Flash team-up The Button is still so fresh in my mind.) Plus, he did so many cool covers for both that there are still plenty to choose from without repeating myself much.

So check out these 13 COVERS — and don’t forget the Flash (click here):

  1. Carmine is No. 1 on my list of Batman artists. I love all of his covers and the alternate issues of Detective Comics that he did the interior art in. The Moldoff Detective issues were always a big letdown.
